According to the research results of anthropometry by Alvin R. Tilli, the pioneer of anthropometry in the United States, the structural dimension design of tunnel escape pipe shows that when people crawl and move, the height of crawling is 800 mm and the length of crawling is 1520 mm.Alvin R. Tilli pointed out that the minimum diameter of the circular tube shall be at least 585mm when people crawling through,that was got by experiment. Therefore, the inner diameter of tunnel escape pipe must be more than 585mm to ensure the normal passage of human body.

At the same time, considering the actual situation on highway tunnel construction site, the external diameter of emergency rescue channel should not be too large, otherwise it will have too much influence on the construction work. Finally, the external diameter of UHMWPE pipeline is decided to be 800mm.
